All MTNA competitions begin at the state level.
Competitions are open to students who study with a member of MTNA or a teacher who has paid
the non-member fee of $150. See below for details on how to enter.
Deadline for all MTNA competition entries: September 14, 2016
State Solo and Chamber winners advance to the East Central Division competition in January. ECD competitions take place in either Illinois, Indiana, Michigan, Ohio, or Wisconsin. The winner of the East Central Division will then compete at the national competition held during the MTNA National Conference in March.
Student composition submissions for Illinois are sent to three judges for evaluation and ranking, and winners are determined by the end of October. Winning pieces are sent to East Central Division judges.
Elementary, ages 5-10 (Composition only)
Junior, ages 11-14
Senior, ages 15-18
Young Artist, ages 19-26
Solo Performance: Brass, Piano, String, Woodwind, Voice (Not all solo performance categories are found at all age levels.)
Chamber Music: String and Wind (The majority of instruments must be in the category. Piano is considered string category.)

Application deadline for Illinois participants in MTNA Solo, Chamber, and Composition Competitions is 3:00 PM Eastern Time on September 14, 2016.
Solo and Chamber Competitions for Illinois entrants will be held November 5-6 2016 at Illinois Wesleyan University in Bloomington, IL.
